11/13/14 - Update = For grades 3-10 the AMP Technology test is now open. This test only allows the students to play with and become familiar with the new technology that will house the new state tests. Teachers will be introducing and working with students on these tests, so that students become as familiar as possible with the new systems. As a parent you to can look at and try out the Technology test. There is a link on the State of Alaska Department of Early Education and Development's website, under the assessments tab. In January small practice tests will be made available that will contain sample questions that portray question format and content. These practice tests will be made available to the teachers, so that they can integrate them into the classrooms and help the students begin to practice with them for their April testing session.
All 11th grade students are currently set to take the WorkKeys by paper/pencil format and an ACT or SAT. The following are the in-school test dates (only open to 11th grade students).
*February 25 - SAT in-school
*March 3 - ACT in-school
*March 4 - WorkKeys
*March 31 - ACT makeup

11/13/14 - This year the state of Alaska has made some major changes to the mandated state testing that every student must participate in during the school year. As of today, the Standards Based Assessment (SBA) and the High School Qualifying Exam (HSGQE) are no longer being used. The SBA was the test all 3-9 grade students took and the HSGQE was the test all 10-12 grade students took in order to graduate from high school. With these tests gone, they have been replaced with the Alaska Measures of Progress (AMP) for 3-10 grade students and the WorkKeys/SAT/ACT for 11 grade students. AMP will be a test given online that covers the new standards adopted by the State of Alaska to integrate more rigor in instruction and course content into the classroom. Every 11th grade student is now required to take one of the following in order to receive a diploma - WorkKeys, ACT, or SAT. Wrangell Public Schools has decided to mandate all 11th graders to take the WorkKeys and the district will pay for this test. In addition, all 11 graders will take (the student gets to choose) either an ACT or SAT and the state of Alaska will pay for the exam. Student must have take one of these exams and completed all of their course work, in order to eligible for a high school diploma. All of this years seniors have take one of the three exams or are currently signed up to take the exam and all of the 11th grade students have met with me and selected the test of their choice - ACT or SAT. All three, the SAT/ACT/WorkKeys will be given during the school day. The in-school test day for the ACT and SAT is only open to 11th grade students, these are not open to the general public. Currently there is a lot of information on these new tests on the State of Alaska Department of Early Education and Development website under the Assessments tab. Information will continued to be released from the school as soon as it is made available to us. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at any time.
10/27/14 - With the end of Quarter 1 seniors find themselves finishing applications for schools and working on several scholarship applications. This is the time to really focus on getting those three or four letters of reference as well as submitting applications for schools.
